The problem
Traditional scholarship giving is faceless — money goes to an institution, not a person, and students never meet the people rooting for them. A founder wanted to change the unit of giving itself: from a check to a nameless fund into a real one-to-one human relationship.
What we built
“1-to-1 Scholarships,” a two-sided platform where students and sponsors find each other directly. A “Hello, I am a [sponsor] seeking a [student]” match search lets either side filter by dozens of criteria — a veteran can find a veteran, an immigrant an immigrant — and sponsors give at whatever level they can afford: books, tuition, food, housing, or their time as a mentor (say, $500 a semester plus five hours a month for a student chasing a similar career). Sign-up, profiles, and discovery for both students and sponsors sit on top of the matching.
How we shipped it
A Laravel + Tailwind application on PostgreSQL, deployed on AWS — the search and matching model designed up front so the two sides can find precisely the person they’re looking for.
Outcome
1-to-1 Scholarships is live, turning academic giving from a donation to a faceless institution into a direct relationship between two people — the site’s own promise, “people help people.”
